British ship ss Kingstonian sailed from Egypt 4 April 1918, was attacked by U68 sub on 11 April & damaged. Sunk by U48 sub on 29 April. Stamp washed off. Written up on A4 page £75.00

Military datestamps Upper card. Written by a French sailor belonging to the "Corps expéditionnaire de Chine" , as he wrote at the top of the card that was sent under military franchise (without a stamp). The special cds is inscribed "CORPS EXPre DU TONKIN:PORT-SAID" 14FEVR 03.( Tonkin was in the north of present Vietnam).This date stamp was used on mail received from soldiers and sailors passing through the Suez Canal in connection with colonial campains. Also a large handstamp (unusually clear) with "MARINE FRANCAISE/SERVICE A LA MER" and anchor in center. Arrival cds in a village in Finistère(France).On reverse : street view of Suez. All strikes clear.A rare card. Lower card. Sent by a French soldier to France, franked by a 10 M. Mouchon Port-Said stamp and cancelled by special datestamp "CORR.D'ARMEES/PORT-SAID" 6 Fev 06 (Corr.= Correspondance= mail). Here we cannot see which colonial campain is concerned.Arrival cds in Meulise (Loire) On reverse, view of surroundings of Marseilles. Shipwreck cover, postmarked Cairo 18 III 18 carried on H.M.T. Kingstonian addressed to Geneva. The ship was torpedoed on 11 April 1918 in the Mediterranean by German U-Boat 68, but was repaired on Sardinia. Arrived Geneva 8 V 18 where a violet handstamp in French "NAUFRAGE" (shipwreck) was struck. (Kingstonian Type 18 - 4x34 mm). See QC 288, March 2024. £40.00
